Equestrian Spirits, Inc., a Registered 501(c)(3) Public Charity, is a full lifetime (no-kill) holistic shelter.
The majority of our horses are Thoroughbreds. From retired stakes winners to abandoned broodmares our unique program offers opportunities for these horses to redefine their lives.
While one of our rescues won the McClay finals at Madison Square Garden in 1988, others may simply live out their lives grazing in peace at our farm.
“Our sanctuary is based on love, freedom, and the principals of the true art of Classical Horsemanship. With rescue and rehab horses trust is imperative. We cater to each individual’s needs as they arise. With the right balance between the freedom of choice and the enticement of what an animal loves the most, a bond will form between horse and human, allowing the team to achieve their personal desires. Given the choice, most horses will guide themselves in the direction of their greatest ability; while their handler must learn to encourage and reward, careful not to inhibit that forte. As reflected in the wisdom of Xenophon (360 B.C.), ‘Anything forced and misunderstood can never be beautiful.’”
Laurie Wolf’s lifetime career in the equine industry brings vast knowledge and varied abilities to the sanctuary. A diverse history in Show Jumping, Dressage, thoroughbred racing, naturally gaited horses, and Paralympics, Laurie guides the (non-breed specific) herd toward directions in which they find comfort and peace.

“My role as veterinary advisor for Equestrian Spirits is to serve as a consultant for general questions of animal care, and to address specific problems in individual animals, if I am the appropriate veterinarian to do so. As a holistic veterinarian, my concern is to identify and treat the roots of a problem, not just its symptoms. ”
Dr. Peck has a strong research background; M.S. in Reproductive Physiology (Equine); 30 years experience in basic, applied, and clinical research. She has post-graduate training and teaching experience in alternative medicine: homeopathy, acupuncture, nutrition, soft tissue therapy, and NeuroEmotional Technique (NET). She is certified in applied kinesiology (functional neurology), kinesiotaping , and thermal imaging. Her clinical interests are: subtle lameness, chronic pain, neuromuscular function, metabolic issues, environmental toxins.

“As a teacher and mental health specialist I bring an alternative dynamic into our program of animal rehabilitation. With my health care expertise, organizational skills, and attention to detail, I use my patience and kindness to ensure a quality of life which many have lost. Believing that all lives have a purpose I look for new paths to rebuild their hopes and their comfort.”
Earning bachelor’s degrees in Elementary Education and Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Polly went on to teach over 20 years including 13 years with inner city children. Currently working as a behavior specialist, she is earning a Master’s degree in special education and behavior analysis. Since 1992 Polly has been using and teaching aromatherapies and natural health modalities for people and animals.
“Due to a degenerative disease I suddenly found myself blind. Forced into early retirement I have a personal understanding of what these animals endure through unexpected life changes. My physical challenges drive and direct me to help our animals find their way to rediscovery of purpose.”
As a Paramedic for nearly 27 years and a Firefighter for 7, De possesses a natural comfort with medicine and hard work. Assisting surgery at the Small Animal Emergency Center in Bradenton, FL, and studying equine psychology and service dog therapy, she focuses her energies towards healing and safety.

You may sponsor all or part of an individual, with some horses needing more support than others. The average fee for a sponsorship is $250 per month. This covers the majority of their feed, hay and farrier (hoof trimming) bills. A small amount of this also goes to what we term ‘topicals.’*
*Topicals are fly sprays, hoof dressings, common skin ointments, shampoos etc. It does not cover medical washes, horseshoes (if needed), cribbing straps, fly masks, dental work, vet charges, tack, special supplements or medicines.
Volunteer work can be once, weekly, monthly or on a random basis. You do not have to work a minimum of hours or days to be appreciated.
A variety or skills may be of service if you are good at fence repair, tree trimming, painting, or cleaning. If you have a desire to work with the animals they appreciate a good grooming, bath or even a quiet walk with a companion.
You do not need to have skills in animal handling because we teach anyone of any level our way.

Equestrian Spirits, Inc. is divided into several different groups of animals, each having rules and regulations, information on individuals as well as protocol for their care.
Our main focus is horses but we also harbor dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, goats and others as we are able to provide. In addition, we are deeply devoted to education, enhancing a level of understanding for animal lovers to help provide the quality of care their animals deserve. With few exceptions all our animals stay with us for life.
As a holistic center, we treat animals with the aid of gifted veterinarians through homeopathy, herbs, nutrition and a variety of natural remedies and modalities. We are also blessed with several conventional medicine veterinarians just as gifted who provide another spectrum for the well-being of those in our care.
***We house limited birds, reptiles, livestock or wildlife depending on their needs and our ability to suit those needs until they are able to be returned to the wild, fostered, sold, donated or otherwise adopted permanently by Equestrian Spirits.
Paladins, for whatever reasons, cannot be ridden, driven, trained, bred or re-homed. This includes those who are injured, skinny, neurotic, emotionally damaged, or have some other impairment causing it unsafe or unfair to have them live elsewhere. Many recover fully able to join the Centaur program. Others are ‘retired’ for life regardless of their age, if their idea of happiness includes only minimal human interaction.
Mentors are our ‘assisted living’ herd. We accept those who have never been neglected, abused, or seriously injured but for personal reasons could no longer remain in their current situation. Some are now senior citizens no longer able to show, breed, travel etc. but have many more happy times in their future. Rather than seeing them saddened watching the world around them continue at its original pace, their owners prefer they reside with us. Elders remain for however long they continue to need our support. Younger horses may eventually move into the Centaur Herd.
Centaurs are schooled to redirect their lives towards a new career. Several have been with us long before our 501(c)(3) status and have been lesson mounts, confidants and friends to many of our volunteers. Some became show horses, returned to approved breeding programs or simply became a best friend, pet or riding companion.
Our Coyote Den houses a limited number of canine friends also adopted from shelters so that their peculiarities become part of our lives making way for the shelter to house someone more socially adept. As a specialist in Coy-dogs we refer to their home as a den although any breed is welcome.
Big Bunneri is a special rabbit haven for ‘oddball bunnies’. One of our rabbits had been a dangerous attacker while another was domestically raised only to be turned loose to fend for himself; not likely pleasant endings until each came to us. Whenever possible we spay and neuter our rabbits so they may commune together.
Kid’s Khatteri is for our family of felines named in honor of a wonderful horse who spent the closing part of his life with us. Kid’s human family supported the design of our cattery and we remained in keeping with our tradition of alternative spellings for the kitty haven. Our cats are predominantly adoptees from no-kill shelters who are ‘unadoptable’. We bring them into our family so the shelters can make room for another more amicable animal to find a happy home. All are spayed/neutered and except for accompanied trips, do not go outside.

OUR CREATURES: Great & Small
There he was. The individual who would change my life. The one who would alter my destination in untold ways. The one who would save my life in response to saving his....
Riding with a friend, I commented on the most wonderful pony I had ever seen. Her shocked expression should have told me there was more to my observation.
I am nearsighted and did not ride in my glasses, hence not noticing the 'pony' was a 'horse' or that he was emaciated -
very spooky - missing much of the hair
on his back.
A week later I accepted a job offer at that same stable as head trainer and instructor. Excitedly I inquired if I would train the bay pony. They did not have a bay pony. Instead out came a terribly narrow, wide-eyed horse with a head so high he looked far beyond his natural height. Almost uncontrollable as he was led to his stall, it was muttered I could "try to do something with this one."
I knew this animal's fear. I knew his loneliness. I immediately knew his heart.
I could not imagine a minute of life
What we went through after that is a story in itself but when my vet said the horse's pneumonia would most likely be fatal and that there was nothing more he could do;
I was left with medicine and a promise he would die....... he did; over 28 years later.
He could not have been more perfect for me than if he was cut from my very soul....
Not only did we share a lifelong jumping career but in between all the competitions, students and accolades, one by one I began to help animals re-define their lives as Amik re-defined mine that early winter day so many years ago.
It is in his honor we build the dream of Equestrian Spirits every day.
As a 501(c)(3) animal sanctuary, our residents have a promise. A promise I whispered to Amik the day he became mine; I promised he would have the most wonderful life I could provide; whatever came our way. Instead he provided me a life I once thought was not worth living.
All our species; whatever their tales, are allowed to find their own path; to make of their life what is meaningful to each of them.
Feel free to join us in our quest for sharing the safety, comfort and joy for all animals.

THE CAUSE: The Saving of a Spirit
Prophet’s Plea was a 15.1 hand freckled grey Connemara / Trakehner gelding whose friends called him Zeik. Born into kind circumstances, his early years were educational and a joy. Sold as a prospect around age four he spent the next ten years fluctuating between neglect and subsistence.
Three different times he resided at a derelict rental stable and struggled to earn his keep, being underfed and overworked. The stable made money while his ‘owner’ obtained discount board. Zeik was the one without benefit.
Two private farms felt sorry and took on the sad looking horse. After tiring of feeding and caring for someone else’s horse both places evicted the owner. However comfortable Zeik had been and however sad the farm owners were to have him removed, neither had the circumstances to support a horse they didn’t own.
Two other times he settled into a facility when the owner was able to procure finances to board. However, ‘self-care’ is defined as an caring for a horse yourself; not a release of providing care. Again, the horse was made to leave.
Although we know of ten residences in fourteen years, there are gaps so his actual number of homes is forever unknown.
A third move from the abusive rental stable to a boarding facility (sold cheap to a child who liked him and a parent
who didn’t) we were able to buy this saddened creature with a promise to change his life. We have since done so; but he has changed ours as well. Slowly through the following year Zeik began to relax and make friends.
Upon his purchase he was thin, had skin and temperament problems… and was lame. By the end of his first year as a Centaur he LOOKED like a different horse, but his emotional damage was another situation. After four good years in youth and ten of neglect, this tenacious gelding began to rejuvenate. Not only did he become a willing partner to numerous equestrians but a gifted one at that!
He became a lesson horse, trail mount and champion show horse; finally pretty, happy, fun to ride and SOUND.
He has a Versatility award in his honor which has been won by such brilliant competitors as Firenze, Ivory Pal, Cimmeron Fancy, Black Majik and others. At 32 he loved living and not too long before was still jumping 4' bringing smiles and happy tears to human friends. His own tears from relief his life had changed - forever.
Thank you Zeik for believing in us and for giving your trust to a group of humans with the hearts you deserve…

"Having been a volunteer the last couple of years, I have personally witnessed the tremendous unequaled level of compassion and vast knowledge Laurie and her group Equestrian Spirits has. The care given to these animals who have been so highly compromised and near death is amazing! Having brought so many back to great health, you won't find another person or rehab program with a higher level of expertise and integrity in animal care. I am honored to co-own an Equestrian Spirits horse and to be a part of such a noble cause."

"I was introduced to the sanctuary in 2009. As an animal nutritionist and international caliber horse trainer, Laurie provides for bodies as well as souls. Though some met misfortune, even giving-up on life; others are blessed with kindness, having arrived for different reasons. The special people who care for them, nurture an amazing zest for life.
As a repeat guest on my radio show, Laurie joins world renown speakers like Dr.Lynn Peck, Dr.Deva Khalsa, Dr.Mac Barksdale, Dr.Jeff Young (Mountain Man Vet on Animal Planet), Dr.Jean Hofve, Dr.Andrew Jones (the Internet Vet), Dr.Arthur Young, and a variety of gifted professionals. I consider it an honor to send this letter of praise. It's not often we get to witness the labors of love and dedication given to animals, community and every heart they touch through endless service for the quality of life.
As a co-owner of two lovely "Spectacular Bid" mares, not only have I had the privilege of sharing my heart with Equestrian Spirits but am honored to be able to support them financially to help give these precious animals a new lease on a happy and healthy life."

"If you love all animals, especially horses, Equestrian Spirits is an awesome organization. As a volunteer I have seen this first hand, Laurie and other volunteers take excellent care of all who come their way. It is unfortunate so many animals are neglected before coming to a place of kindness and safety. For them, the reprieve from pain and fear alters the course of their lives along with the very people who care for them. Many other animals find life shift away from its original course, now in need of a new plan. This sanctuary offers just that. I have seen no better program that provides the camaraderie and joy to match that of a private, loving home."

"I can't begin to tell you how much Laurie Wolf has helped me over the years in many ways with various animals. She is a very gifted person and horseman who has dedicated her life to making animal lives better. Several years ago I had a Prix St. George horse who started to spook for no apparent reason. He would do it while riding in the ring, on trails, even walking to or from the pasture. One day while walking him from the barn to the mounting block he jumped sideways and crashed into me breaking my hip. Laurie agreed to take him to her sanctuary where he could retire and have absolutely no pressure. Kid was very large and a big hit with the children. Laurie told me one day there was a very tiny girl who was quite timid; Kid went over to her and put his head down so she could pet him...what a boost to her confidence. He clearly enjoyed his new home and new job, it was the best decision to send him to Equestrian Spirits."

"I am a cat person. For many years, I have worked in Trap, Neuter, and Release, or as I preferred it, Re-home. It was this passion for lost, abandoned or injured cats that brought me to contact Equestrian Spirits, and Laurie Wolf. Over the years, I’ve been blessed with the love of many animals. I have witnessed the devotion and trust the horses and other animal residents of Equestrian Spirits shower on Laurie and her team. It’s an amazing thing to see. After years of volunteering, I am still awed by the knowledge of care, the thought behind each of our human actions regarding animals, and the shear compassion of everyone there. I am honored to part of Equestrian Spirits."

"Laurie Wolf understands and cares about animals more than any other person I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Her Sanctuary, Equestrian Spirits, has helped to heal the body, mind and spirit of every single one of the many animals who have been fortunate enough to end up in her care. The amazing transformations of some have been nothing short of miraculous. The animals are cared for and treated with love and compassion using natural, wholesome, healthy, nontoxic methods whenever possible with outstanding results. At Equestrian Spirits the health and happiness of the animals always comes first. The animals never have to worry about dealing with the adversities they once faced because they are given a safe and loving ‘Forever’ home where they will never be abused or torn away from their home and friends/family ever again. If only more people were to embrace the principles of Equestrian Spirits, this world would be a much better place to live. We here at TLC applaud Laurie Wolf for all that she does for animals and humans alike; and we are proud to support
Equestrian Spirits, Inc."

"Becoming connected with Equestrian Spirits has proven to be an invaluable resource. Laurie has enhanced my understanding of my animals, improving my relationship with each and every one. She has changed the way I view behaviors and their perception of my actions. It was also through Equestrian Spirits I acquired my barn cat. Alice was a wild/feral cat but has turned out to be a wonderful companion! I cannot thank Equestrian Spirits Inc. enough for bringing Alice into my life."
"I have been a dog trainer, competitor and breeder for 30 years. I also work at a municipality run animal control shelter. In my profession, I have had the privilege to work with Laurie Wolf for consulting services. I have found Equestrian Spirits to be a great organization, caring for the animals first and foremost! Over the years, I can see that Equestrian Spirits operates with honesty, integrity and absolutely always in the best interest of the animals. I can not tell you the numerous times I have heard of volunteers working long and late hours to care for the animals. Their dedication always amazes me! They not only provide food, water and shelter, but with do it with love and compassion, valuing each life, no matter how small. Equestrian Spirits is second to none!"

"As a practicing veterinarian for the past 37 years, I’ve seen my share of rescue operations. Equestrian Spirits is one of the best I’ve had the pleasure of being associated with. Over the past 6 1/2 years, I’ve worked with Laurie Wolf, doing nutritional consults on rescued animals, seeing first hand how well these animals are treated, and how beautifully most respond. Despite constant funding shortages, Laurie Wolf and her crew have created safe, compassionate spaces for these forgotten, often mistreated animals. Equestrian Spirits is an organization I can stand behind."

"I had the honor and privilege of having my very successful and wonderful stallion Giotto in retirement with Laurie at her farm. My heart and love was with this horse and it was so important to me that he be treated with the same love and dignity in his retirement and last days. I knew Laurie was the right person for him! She went above and beyond and treated him like the Prince he was honoring my wishes with spoiling him and continuing to treat him like the amazing show horse he was till his last days. I will be eternally grateful for her love and care for my Giotto who was so precious to me! May her exceptional work go on for other precious animals!"
